For the past three years, I have been taking care of my son largely on my own, as my husband has been working. As a result, I have had very little time for myself or to concentrate on other things. I mostly enjoyed free-hand crocheting as a hobby; however, it was impossible to simultaneously crochet and write a pattern at the same time. When I decided to write one myself, I was surprised by the amount of effort required to create a high-quality crochet pattern. To combine my creativity with productivity, I have implemented a system that allows me to do both.
To create a crochet design, you must first create a plan or sketch of the design, and then use this plan to guide you as you crochet a sample of the pattern. The sample will allow you to fine-tune the design and make any necessary adjustments before creating the final product.
To accurately document a crochet design, you must take clear, high-quality images of each step and carefully record the instructions. It is often helpful to type these instructions on a computer to ensure they are legible and easy to follow.
To showcase a crochet design, it is important to take high-quality photographs of the finished product. This can be done through a photoshoot featuring the design on a model or through a flat-lay style photograph. Either way, it is essential to capture the design in a way that accurately represents its appearance and highlights its unique features.
The pattern must be tested and finalized to confirm the accuracy of its grading.
To promote a crochet design, it is important to advertise it online across multiple platforms. To maximize the reach of the design and potentially generate sales, it is often helpful to plan a professional launch.
As a solopreneur, managing all the steps involved in creating and promoting a crochet pattern can be challenging, especially when time is limited. To streamline the process and make the most of my time, I have developed a system that involves breaking down each task into smaller steps and setting time limits for each one. To ensure that I can complete these tasks effectively, I ask myself “What would I do if I had half the time allocated for each task?”. This helps me to prioritize and focus my efforts on the most important tasks.
Let’s consider the task of photographing a crochet stitch pattern for instance. Normally photo shooting takes 30 minutes to complete. If I only had 15 minutes to complete this task, I would need to divide the steps into smaller, more manageable chunks in order to be productive.
Some potential steps might include:
Setting up my workspace with a clean table, tripod, and adequate lighting
Creating the stitch pattern and taking images
Checking that my nails are neat and presentable
By breaking the task down into smaller parts and focusing on one step at a time, I have found that I am ultimately more productive and able to complete the task efficiently.
